Barnacle Geese in Dumfries and Galloway

Barnacle GeeseThe whole population of Svalbard Barnacle Geese arrive every autumn from the Arctic to overwinter on  the Solway coast.  From the end of September until the end of April they can be seen feeding on grasslands along the coast.

Best places to see the Barnacle Geese are at RSPB Mersehead and WWT Caerlaverock.  Every evening the geese fly out to roost on the sandflats, these huge flocks of geese form one of the best wildlife spectacles in the UK.

Barnacles are small black and white geese, and are recognisable from Canada Geese by their white faces and black necks and chests.
