Osprey in Dumfries and Galloway

OspreyOsprey are a fish eating bird of prey.  They are about the same size as a Red Kite but are recognisable by their very pale underside when in flight.  They have a distinctive striped head and migrate from Western Africa every Spring to spend their summer in the UK.  Ospreys can be seen April-September in the area.

There are three places to see Ospreys in the region.  WWT Caerlaverock, Wigtown, where footage can be viewed in the Wigtown County buildings daily from April-September and at Threave Castle, which affords the best views of these birds in the region.
