Cream o'Galloway

Cream o’ Galloway is the Visitor Attraction at Rainton organic farm on the edge of the Fleet Valley National Scenic Area. Open to visitors, the farm is set in a beautiful landscape of rugged pasture with ancient woodland and ponds. The farm produces luxury ice cream, artisan cheeses and beef, all of which are used in the tearoom on site. You can participate in seasonal wildlife activities and enjoy miles of nature trails, on foot, by bicycle or with your dog. Join a tour to learn about our passion for animal welfare and how we encourage wildlife diversity.

Cream o’ Galloway offers a natural experience for the whole family. Built for adults as well as children, the rustic adventure playground includes a viewing tower as tall as the oak trees, offering the most spectacular view over the Solway Firth and the Galloway Hills.

Rainton is a 329 hectare farm lying amongst the rolling hills of Galloway and has been farmed by the Finlay’s since 1927. The farm has a dairy herd, sheep and beef cattle and converted to organic production during 1999 – 2001. The farm provides habitats for many important species including barn owls, tawny owls and buzzards. Evidence of badgers, roe deer and foxes is often seen and if you are very lucky, you may glimpse the shy red squirrels in the woodland and the otters on the ponds.

Notable animal species: Barn Owl, Peregrine Falcon, Grasshopper Warbler, Snipe, Common Whitethroat, Reed Bunting, Sky Lark, Spotted Flycatcher, Yellowhammer, Tree Sparrow, Bullfinch, Northern Brown Argus, Common Lizard, Common Toad, Adder, Brown Hare, Red Squirrel, Otter.

Notable plant species: Bluebell, Sun Spurge, Common Spotted Orchid.

Best in: spring with songs of migrant birds throughout the nature trails, and the majestic bluebells in the Glen woodland. Time spent watching the ponds in summer is rewarded with great displays of dragonflies and damselflies.
