Aldouran Wetland Garden, Leswalt, Stranraer

Aldouran Wetland Garden lies between the foot of Aldouran Glen (‘Glen of the Otter’) and the village of Leswalt. It incorporates a sensory garden and a wetland habitat of pond, stream and reed bed. Aldouran Glen (Woodland Trust Scotland) is an integral part of the Aldouran experience.
Notable animal species: Red Squirrel, woodland and wetland birds
Associated flora and fauna of garden, wetland and woodland
Also notable for its dry stone walled raised beds and the general sensation of tranquillity reported by visitors.

Best in: Each season has something different to offer at Aldouran although the garden looks at its best in spring and summer.

Location

Three miles from Stranraer on the edge of Leswalt village.
Post code:DG9 0LJ
Grid Reference: NX010635

How to get there

By car: follow the A718 from Stranraer to Leswalt. You can turn left at the crossroads on entering the village onto the B7043 then just after the houses on the right, turn right at the Aldouran Wetland Garden signpost and follow the track to a small parking area opposite the entrance through the kissing gate. This provides better accessibility for people with mobility problems. For others and for access to the village facilities such as public toilets, it is preferable to drive direct to suitable parking areas near the Village Hall and Store where there is a short track signposted from the bus shelter.

By bus: Service No.408 from Portrodie bus stop, Stranraer

Facilities

A hard path runs between the raised beds and through the garden into the wetland where a boardwalk leads to the observation hide. This section is all wheelchair accessible.
The observation hut affords views over the wetland and into the woodland immediately beside the Red Squirrel feeding station.
Picnic tables and a communal seating area are provided
An earthen path leads from the observation hide through Aldouran Glen Wood. Visitors may either continue to the top of the glen or use the foot bridge and steps provided half way up. Both routes lead onto the farm track and ultimately back to the village. Waterproof footwear advised. Walking time - 1 hr maximum.
We encourage visits from individuals and groups (including nurseries, schools, youth groups and adult organisations) and offer guided tours and wildlife activities by arrangement.
